About
Future Academic Psychiatrist. Researcher. Advocate.
Nicole Alonso is a medical student in her clinical years at the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), one of Brazil's leading federal universities, with a clear and unwavering commitment: to become an academic psychiatrist dedicated to advancing child and adolescent mental health through scientific research, clinical excellence, and international collaboration.
From the earliest stages of her medical training, Nicole distinguished herself not only through strong academic performance but through an exceptional quality of intellectual engagement — a deep curiosity about human behavior, a sustained interest in neuroscience, and an instinctive ability to connect with patients and families across complex, emotionally charged clinical settings.
Her engagement extends far beyond the clinical ward. As co-founder of the Mental Health Academic League at UFF, facilitator of the Memory Workshop for elderly community members, and active volunteer in the Pediatric and Neonatal Extension Program, Nicole has demonstrated the leadership, empathy, communication skills, and service orientation that define outstanding physician-scientists.
With an active research portfolio, a growing record of community leadership, and a determined focus on international academic psychiatry, Nicole is building the profile of a future physician-scientist who will contribute meaningfully to the advancement of global mental health — across clinics, research institutions, and borders.

My Journey to Psychiatry
A Personal Mission in Medicine
The following is written in Nicole's own voice — a reflection on the experiences, questions, and convictions that have shaped her commitment to becoming an academic psychiatrist.
The First Encounter
"My path to Psychiatry began not in a lecture hall, but in a moment of clinical silence. During my Child and Adolescent Psychiatry rotation, I sat with a twelve-year-old who had not spoken meaningfully to anyone in months. What struck me was not the diagnosis — it was the realization that the most powerful tool I had was simply my full, undivided presence. That moment crystallized something I had suspected since the beginning of my training: that the mind is the most complex and most human frontier in medicine."
Understanding the Brain, Understanding People
"My interest in Psychiatry deepened through Neurology, where I began to see how profoundly brain structure and function shape who we are — how we think, feel, relate, and recover. The boundary between neurology and psychiatry is not a wall but a gradient, and it is precisely at that interface — where neuroscience meets lived human experience — that I find the most compelling questions in medicine. Neuropsychiatry is not simply a subspecialty I admire; it is the intellectual framework through which I understand the patients I wish to serve."
Community as Classroom
"Working in the Memory Workshop, I spent months facilitating cognitive stimulation sessions for elderly residents facing memory loss, isolation, and fear. These individuals were not patients in a clinical trial — they were people, with stories, families, and a profound need to be seen and heard. Simultaneously, my work in the Pediatric and Neonatal Extension Program showed me how early adversity shapes development across an entire lifetime. Community medicine taught me that psychiatric illness does not begin at the clinic door. It begins in families, in neighborhoods, in systems — and that is where meaningful prevention must also begin."
Research as Responsibility
"Science is how I intend to make my compassion scalable. My ongoing research into the mental health sequelae of childhood trauma, neuropsychiatric manifestations of autoimmune disease, and community mental health literacy is not merely academic — each project represents a question I encountered in real patients who deserved better answers than currently exist. I am training to be a physician-scientist because I believe that the clinician who does not generate knowledge is limited to applying what others have discovered. I want to do both."
A Global Commitment
"Brazil has given me a clinical education of rare breadth and human richness. The United States offers the research infrastructure, subspecialty training, and academic mentorship I need to reach my full potential as a psychiatrist. My goal is not simply to train abroad — it is to build lasting bridges between Brazilian and U.S. academic institutions, to strengthen the pipeline of Latin American physicians in global academic psychiatry, and to return, eventually, as someone who has contributed something meaningful to the field."
"I chose Psychiatry because it demands everything medicine has to offer — science, humanity, patience, and courage — and gives back the same."
